UTM DEGREE ++ PROGRAM
“Self Enhancement Towards Successful Employability”
INTRODUCTION
The UTM Degree ++ program was officially launched on 19th August 2005 by the Vice
Chancellor of UTM. It is handled by SPACEUTM through its the Professional
Development Unit. It is a social duty for SPACEUTM in particular and the university
in general, help all the UTM’s graduates be more competitive in facing their challenging
career (Programmed Structure). This is an effort from UTM to add value to the knowledge
and skills of UTM’s graduates which is different from their core courses.
UTM Degree++ programmes will equip the graduates, especially final year students,
with knowledge and skills in adapting themselves with their jobs and technical skills
in their chosen career.
WHY UTM DEGREE++ PROGRAM
Study carried out by Jobstreet.com, we can conclude that a good resume is very important
before applying for a job/interview.
- on average, an employer spent 15 second on every resume.
- on average, an employer will choose one candidate for an interview for every 245
resume.
- A lot of company receives more than 100 000 resumes a year
- Between 75 % - 80% of resumes end up unread or in the dust bin
- More than 80 000 graduates are unemployed. This figure was based on the statistic
given by the Minister of Prime Minister Department, Datuk Mustapha Mohamad on 19th
February 2006.
- The problems are the lack of command in English, communication and information
technology.
PROGRAMME UTM DEGREE ++ IMPLEMENTATION
The participants of UTM Degree ++ Program includes all the final year students from
every faculty. Graduates, especially the final year students, are expected to have
three (3) additional certificate that includes “How to Get Yourself Employed” course
and two (2) other courses from different fields. These fields are either a specialty
programme in the centres of excellence at the faculty, IT or communication skills.
It is also in line with UTM’s vision and mission statements, the University is committed
to graduating competent, creative and versatile professionals who are guided by
high moral and ethical values in service of God and mankind.
It was implemented through short modules which were held for 1 to 2 days, on weekends,
involves 10 faculties in UTM. 10 faculties include Faculty of Buit Environment,
Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering, Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, Faculty of Science,
Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and
Information Systems, Faculty of Management and Human Resource Development, Faculty
of Education.
Courses was offered (other than technical course) are quality management, financial
management, communication skills and others. The instructor for the programme includes
the representatives from the faculty and the centre of excellence: Wireless Communication
Centre (WCC), Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP), Automotive Development Centre
(ADP), Composite Centre (CC), High Voltage & Hugh Current Institute (IVAT) dan
Institute For Advanced Information Technology (AITI).
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
There are four (4) objectives to this programme:
• To enhance the employability of the UTM’s graduates.
• To equipped the UTM’s graduates with the skills needed by the industry.
• To produce competent graduates
• To developed UTM’s graduate attribute and generic skills
